Funky Friday Playlist 7/16

I was a guest DJ on the commercial station The River 93.9 WRSI on Friday. Phil's excellent program Funky Friday runs weekly 6 until midnight. He usually plays classic soul and funk in the first portion, followed by nuttier and more contemporary funk. We utilized the classic side to showcase some music by Allen Toussaint who plays the Green River Fest this year. Andujar guests on Funky Fridays on commercial station The River tomorrow night

(Allen Toussaint)

I'm heading down to Northampton tonight for a taping of Funky Fridays with Phil. His weekly funk and soul radio program on commercial station The River 93.9 WRSI has been grooving our souls for years. It is my pleasure to make another appearance. It will air tomorrow night from 6 til midnight.

The first half of the program we'll be playing classic soul and funk, including a big spotlight on Allen Toussaint, legendary New Orleans producer/artist/bandleader/icon who will be playing at this year's Green River Festival.

And the second half will feature a bunch of contemporary funk jams, as well as some bugalús.

So tune in on your way to Sweet Exorcist!

Here's the playlist for my Funky Friday guest spot on The River

Thanks everyone who listened in to the broadcast last night on commercial radio station WRSI, The River, as I was guest selector with Phil Straub.

We pre-recorded it on Thursday night for Friday broadcast, which happened to run during the hours of our Rumba Psicodélica jam at the People's Pint. Speaking of which, I love all the good dancers and percussionists who came out. The joint was jumpin' and just alive with rhythm. Thanks to DJ partners Mike P, Bongohead and B-COMING.

Here's the Funky Friday rundown. Most of them were selections from their library and I added a few of my own. Phil also selected some of them. We ran "classic soul" from 6-9, with a break for the syndicated "Putumayo World Suck Hour" (did I just type that?). Then the program resumed with the 10-midnite "crazy funk" stuff, most of which was the type of music you may hear on my weekly Clandestino show at WMUA.

Thanks to Phil and WRSI.

Starting with the "classic soul" slot...
Edwin Starr..."War"
BT Express..."Do It (Til You're satisfied)"
Lyn Collins..."Think (About It)"
William DeVaughn..."Be Thankful"
Undisputed Truth..."Smiling Faces"

Dyke & the Blazers..."We Got More Soul"
Fuckin' A--this is one of the greatest bands ever!!!!!!!

The JBs..."Pass the Peas"
Beginning of the End..."Funky Nassau"
Stevie Wonder..."I Wish"
For Stevie's birthday.

Houseguests..."What So Never The Dance"
This is the Bootsy/JB's "Love Power Peace" band.

Joe Quarterman & Free Soul..."The Trouble with Trouble"
Since Phil's from DC, I think he'd agree with me on this track!

Aretha Franklin..."Chain of Fools" (original unedited version)
This is one my oldest faves, from when I was very small, except that this version never came out till the Lady Soul CD reissue in the 90s.

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings..."This Land is your Land"
Hank Jacobs..."Elijah Rockin' With Soul"
Major Lance..."I'm the One"
Breakestra..."Sister Sanctified"

Funky Fridays!

Just wanted to hip y'all to the Funky Friday show on WRSI (The River). Not only does Phil play all sorts of groovy music every Friday from 7-midnight, but he also sometimes has guests. Tonight (5/7) will be the one & only DJ Bongohead who is sure to mix in some latin funk, bugalú and salsa. And next week (5/14) it will be me, Andujar. I'll be selecting funk, soul, latin and african sounds. Of course, being commercial radio, these will be pre-recorded as there is no way I can be in two places at once (as we'll be running our Sweet Exorcist monthly at the People's Pint simultaneously). So if you're too antisocial to go out that night, you can always tune in! WRSI.com. Funky Friday in Philville on the River 7-midnight.
