Curated by Christoph Cox

Participating Artists:
Manon De Boer (NL), Seth Cluett (US), Tony Cokes (US), Luke Fowler (UK), Jesse Jones (IE), Paul Lindale (UK/US), Kara Lynch (US), Mirko Martin (DE), The Otolith Group (UK), Jenny Perlin (US), Mathias Poledna (AT), Raha Raissnia & Charles Curtis (IR/US), Steve Roden (US), Billy Roisz (AT), Julian Rosefeldt (DE), Simpson/Meade (US), Miki Tajima (US), Su-Mei Tse (LU), and Daniel Warner (US).

The 3rd annual Brick + Mortar International Video Festival presents work by a selection of contemporary artists who focus on sound, music, and relationships of dissonance and consonance between the aural and the visual. Since the 1990s, sound has become a central concern in contemporary art, with many leading video artists and filmmakers actively exploring the sonic potential of audio-visual media. The 2011 edition of Brick + Mortar showcases some of the most interesting and engaging of these explorations from the past decade by a group of prominent artists from nine countries.
Early avant-garde filmmakers worried that the advent of sound would reduce cinema to an illusionistic portrayal of the world, with sound a subordinate prop for the visual image. These worries proved to be well justified. Present-day avant-gardists have heeded those early warnings, giving sound an equal place and exploring the productive difference between the auditory and visual registers of video and film. Luke Fowler and Raha Raissnia both collaborate with sound artists to develop allied strategies for capturing light and sound. Refusing image altogether, Mirko Martin's video operates solely through sound and text. Conversely, Steve Roden’s video is silent but functions as a kind of visual and musical score. Mathias Poledna, Manon de Boer, and Mika Tajima use the camera to capture and intervene in musical performance and recording. Other projects uncover the critical potential of music. 2010 Turner Prize nominee The Otolith Group explores the Afro-Futurist mythology of the Detroit electronic duo Drexciya, while Tony Cokes presents a video essay that examines the complex racial politics of House and Techno. Via these and other strategies, the projects presented at this year’s Brick + Mortar festival amplify the “audio” aspect of this “video” festival.

The Brick + Mortar festival takes place in Greenfield, an historic mill town in western Massachusetts. Transforming the city’s downtown into a temporary arts district, the festival presents video projections and installations within a variety of extraordinary architectural sites that are in various stages of renovation. Presented by ConjunctionArts in partnership with local businesses, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, the Greenfield Business Association, Greenfield Community College, and Five Colleges Inc., the festival is free and open to the public.

February Action!

Some local thangs going down this month for y'all:

The Alchemystics are playing two gigs this weekend...one for the whole family on Saturday (2/12) morning 10am at First Churches in Northampton, a benefit for Nonotuck Community School. And also on Friday (2/11) night at the Elevens, with Love in Stockholm, 930pm-2am. There's never a bad time to check out their soulful reggae/rap blend!

On Saturday night (2/12), I'll be dropping bombs with Studebaker Hawk at the People's Pint for our regular Sweet Exorcist throwdown there. We'll be helping Michele P celebrate her birthday too! Come hear our eclectic vinyl mix and dance the winter blues out of your system. No cover charge, 10pm-1am. (Poster by Sightlab)

Friday (2/18) will see some funk and afrobeat raiding Greenfield at The Arts Block, thanks to the army of Shokazoba and an attack from Chicago Afrobeat Project (whom you may remember from our Afrobeat Revival compilation--vinyl already sold out!). 8pm-1am. And tune in to Radio Clandestino on Monday 2/14 when Shok reps will be on hand to discuss life and love, debut cuts from their brand new album, and give away tickets to the above show.

Ras Daniel and I had so much fun last month at the Blue Rock in Shelburne Falls that we decided to keep it going monthly, every third Saturday, this month on 2/19. Last time out we played some reggae/dancehall, afro funk/afrobeat as well as some wicked rap. We'll keep a bunch of things in the crates to keep it groovy all night. Again, no cover/21+. 9pm.

February 24th returns the bi-weekly I-Ganic Sound System at Bishop's Lounge in Northampton. The most crucial roots, the freshest steppas, heaviest dubs and uplifting dancehall. Every other thursday! 21+ 10pm-2am.

Holy mother of funk, wait to you come hear what we'll be jamming on Friday 2/25 at The Rendezvous in Turners Falls! A very special edition of Rumba Psicodélica, we've been wanting to do a Funk Rock night for awhile and now we will! Studebaker Hawk, Bongohead and I will be transporting you via vinyl time machine back to the funky 70s with a mind-blowing assortment of funky rock and rocking funk from all over the globe. Popular, as well as obsure, but always funky! Visuals by Mr. Bell of Bell & Howl. This will be an all-vinyl blowout, inspired by the likes of Betty Davis, Funkadelic, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Barrabas, Isley Brothers, James Gang, ZZ Top, Baby Huey, Sly Stone and all the 70s funk-rockers, back when that was something truly hip. Black, white, brown and beyond...we can all get down on a united dancefloor. Dig!
And bring your game: we'll be handing out prizes for funkiest and most rocking outfits!
No cover, 930-1.
(Poster by Pablo Yglesias)

And don't forget that Alan Evans (of Soulive) will be holding it down with a varying cast of talent every Thursday night at The Arts Block in Greenfield. 930-1.

Here's the playlist for my Funky Friday guest spot on The River

Thanks everyone who listened in to the broadcast last night on commercial radio station WRSI, The River, as I was guest selector with Phil Straub.

We pre-recorded it on Thursday night for Friday broadcast, which happened to run during the hours of our Rumba Psicodélica jam at the People's Pint. Speaking of which, I love all the good dancers and percussionists who came out. The joint was jumpin' and just alive with rhythm. Thanks to DJ partners Mike P, Bongohead and B-COMING.

Here's the Funky Friday rundown. Most of them were selections from their library and I added a few of my own. Phil also selected some of them. We ran "classic soul" from 6-9, with a break for the syndicated "Putumayo World Suck Hour" (did I just type that?). Then the program resumed with the 10-midnite "crazy funk" stuff, most of which was the type of music you may hear on my weekly Clandestino show at WMUA.

Thanks to Phil and WRSI.

Starting with the "classic soul" slot...
Edwin Starr..."War"
BT Express..."Do It (Til You're satisfied)"
Lyn Collins..."Think (About It)"
William DeVaughn..."Be Thankful"
Undisputed Truth..."Smiling Faces"

Dyke & the Blazers..."We Got More Soul"
Fuckin' A--this is one of the greatest bands ever!!!!!!!

The JBs..."Pass the Peas"

Stevie Wonder..."I Wish"
For Stevie's birthday.

Houseguests..."What So Never The Dance"
This is the Bootsy/JB's "Love Power Peace" band.

Joe Quarterman & Free Soul..."The Trouble with Trouble"
Since Phil's from DC, I think he'd agree with me on this track!

Aretha Franklin..."Chain of Fools" (original unedited version)
This is one my oldest faves, from when I was very small, except that this version never came out till the Lady Soul CD reissue in the 90s.

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings..."This Land is your Land"
Hank Jacobs..."Elijah Rockin' With Soul"
Major Lance..."I'm the One"
Breakestra..."Sister Sanctified"
Parliament..."Testify"
I didn't realize this was the Casablanca version. I actually wanted the Revilot 45 version, heard here.

Sly & the Family Stone..."I Want to Take You Higher"
James Brown..."I Got the Feeling"
Mickey & the Soul Generation..."Iron Leg"
Check it out here.

Al Green..."Love & Happiness"

Here's where we really start getting crazy...the 10-midnite slot!

Up, Bustle & Out..."Rebel Satellite"
Tom Tom Club..."Genius of Love"
Orlando Cachaito Lopez..."Cachaito in Laboratory"
