Tejas (WMUA Fundraising Premium 2009)

One of the clandestino show highlights of 2009 was when Bongohead joined me for a special six hour feature on the music of the country known as Texas. There is so much that we could only scratch the surface. We played lots of tejano and funk musics, with some blues, jazz, punk, psych, rap, etc thrown in. It was quite a task trying to fit some faves into two CDs here. Trying to fairly represent the HUGE country of Texas is quite a task. But we had to include contemporary projects like Grupo Fantasma (who's leader Adrian Quesada has been on the show three times!), as well as classic underheard funk artists like Timothy McNealy. We hope you enjoy the set.

Tabula Rasa Playlist 11/25...Andujar Fills In For Victor

I had such a good time hanging with my stoned self whilst filling in for Sir Victor Signore. He'll be back on his program next week. Tabula Rasa airs every Wednesday 6-8pm (ET) at WMUA.org.

I kept it in the eclectic tradition of Tabula Rasa, while mostly playing stuff I wouldn't normally play on clandestino. Most who know me even a little bit know about my love for the avant-garde and noisy side of things. After all, even on clandestino I like to play the HARDEST and HEAVIEST of afro/latin/tropical musics. On Tabula Rasa I did some creative mixing and blending of various sounds and styles and I think it worked out well...certainly it did for those who called in some support on Thanksgiving Eve. After, it was off to the Hope & Olive in Greenfield for a really fun vinyl dance party!

It goes like this (artist/ song/ album/ label):

Wednesday Night Jams!

I'll be filling in for the esteemed Victor Signore on "Tabula Rasa". I've been long a fan of this eclectic radio show broadcast Wednesday nights at WMUA.org. Victor mixes up various ideas on sound, from abstract percussive avant-garde to "ethnic" folk the world over, with some saxophone blowouts, heavy grooves of all sorts and various nuttiness. I'll be doing an extended version starting at 530pm (ET) and running it until 8. Yulin's show "No Enemy" precedes and "Auditory Magic" follows. Expect to hear some local noise, international psych, Xenakis, death metal, free jazz, Oum Kalthum and other surprises. The playlist will be posted to this blog. Thanks Victor for allowing me the pleasure.

And how about the dancing crowd!!!! There will be a serious killer jam at the Hope & Olive at 9pm. I'll be joined by DJ 12XU for some all-vinyl enlightenment. The Hope & Olive is a real fun place with a good crowd. Enthusiastic and supportive...and a great beer menu I might add! We'll be bringing all vinyl (as usual!) of your favorite classics and some underknown records that are great for dancing. This will be a gem of a night, no doubt. We'll be spinning funk, bugalú, funky hip-hop, new wave, salsa, Motown, garage, afrobeat, some punk & reggae...and who knows what else! It's no cover and a cool spot with plenty of parking. And Happy Birthday to Jim, Sarah, and the other three or so birthdays that I'm sure I'll be toasting Wednesday night. Cheers!

And for those that feel the Turners side of things, keep in mind the trip that is the Montague Phantom Brain Exchange (#23...the pre-Thanksgiving Relaxation Station) will be transmitting with a special local DJ hobknob featuring MPBE curator Cloaca, Rob Forman, Ansel (from upstairs) and more. Interested parties should come thru with wax in hand. That'll be running from 9 til 1 at the Rendezvous in Turners Falls (3rd St & Ave A).

So there's lots of options for your holiday preparation. And no, I don't do that thing.

I had so much fun today. Folks gave me lots of good music to check out...stuff got sent in from the likes of Soundway, Analog Africa, Waxing Deep and Nacional (among others) in the last couple of weeks. And triple cheers to Phil Straub, DJ Bongohead and DJ 12XU for handing me some good shit to play. It makes my job easy! And it was also great to run into good folks one right after the other (literally!). All the awesome folks at WMUA, Chris at Newbury, Alex (the black black metal guy), REQ (check Trggr Radio), DJ & Andy. Thanks Olivia for the fine beers at Amherst Brewing Company...and peace out! (There's my Thankful seasonal list...No I don't celebrate murdered Indians or murdered turkeys. Thanks but no thanks). PS-check us out at the Hope & Olive on Wednesday night for a supreme Greenfield dance party...all vinyl, free admission! 9 pm. PPS-I will be filling in for Victor Signore on Tabula Rasa, WMUA Wednesday night 530-8.

Andujar will be filling in for Victor on Tabula Rasa 11/25

In addition to my usual Monday afternoon edition of clandestino (230-430pm ET at WMUA), I will also enjoy filling in on Tabula Rasa this coming Wednesday. Usually hosted by Victor Signore, the show is a completely bonkers eclectic mix of music, often weaving avant-garde with psych funk, Eastern European with afrobeat, free jazz with folk musics from around the world. One of my favorite shows, I will be taking the reins for Wednesday night and it promises to be a lot of fun. I'm planning on bringing a similar eclecticism...a bit of free jazz, avant-garde, psychedelic, and other sounds from around the globe. Catch it Wednesday night 530-8pm (ET) at WMUA.org.
