Radio Clandestino playlist 2/4

Thanks for joining us for another edition of Radio Clandestino. I had a great time and got some positive phone calls and messages about this week's program. I look forward to next Monday. Catch it every week 230-430 pm (ET) at WMUA.

James Newton..."The Crips"...Water Mystery...(Gramavision)
An expanded ensemble led by underrated composer/flautist Newton. Very lovely tune dedicated to the rough street gang.

Joe Henderson..."Current Events"...Black Is The Color...(Milestone)
Very cool use of electronics and improvisation coming from a bop-reared player.

Matt Weston..."Coiling for the Kickback"...45...(7272 Music)
My old friend, Albany-based artist Matt Weston, put out this brand new and limited to 150 7" with a couple tunes in tribute to former Tizzy & Crystalized Movements drummer Teri Morris, who passed away in 2011. Matt played in Tizzy with her. He plays every instrument on this single. See more info here.

DJ Olive..."Round Fire Strut"...Bodega...(The Agriculture)
DJ Olive's The Agriculture label put out so many cool abstract beats (illbient) on 12" and CD. Olive's own CD mixtape here runs all over the boroughs with snippets of sounds from each neighborhood's flavor in a dubby urban pulse. We lifted a section for your enjoyment. You can still purchase the digital version here, but it sure is fun naming locations on the sleeve. A few known spots!

The Special AKA..."Racist Friend"...In The Studio...(Chrysalis)
Classic Specials tune that has been running through my head all week, so here we are (official video).

Pablo Gad..."Hard Times"...Hard Times...(Soul Village reissue)

Banda União Black..."Na Palma da Mao"...Banda União Black...(Vampisoul)
Heavy Brazilian breaks.

The Impressions..."Do You Wanna Win"...LP promo 7"...(Curtom)
Rare promo only 7" for the "Check Out Your Mind" LP, production by Curtis Mayfield.

Ronnie Foster..."Chunky"...45...(Blue Note)

Stevie Wonder..."Girl Blue"...Music of my Mind...(Tamla)
One of my favorites of many great Stevie LPs!

Perrey & Kingsley..."Mas que Nada"...Kaleidoscopic Vibrations...(Vanguard)

Philip Cohran & Artistic Heritage Ensemble..."Unity"...Philip Cohran & Artistic Heritage Ensemble...(Katalyst reissue)

Wolfgang Dauner Group..."Flute Woman"...Rischka's Soul...(Brain reissue)

Fumaça Preta..."Eu era um Cão"...45...(Music with Soul)

Hayvanlar Alemi..."Alkiskan Misafiler Iki"...Guarana Superpower...(Sublime Frequencies)

Koudede..."Hat-Iman-in"...45...(Sublime Frequencies)
Translation: "She is in my Heart".

Mr Chop..."Electric Vibes"...45...(Stark Reality)

Chicha Libre..."The Ride of the Valkyries"...Canibalismo...(Barbés)
Chicha Libre..."Primavera en la Selva"...7"...(Barbés)
MassMOCA will be hosting Chicha Libre and DJ Bongohead this Saturday, Feb 9. Info on the concert here and here for the Barbés site. Click the image to enlarge the poster by Bongohead, who contributes an informative write-up here.

Orquesta la Integracion..."Caiman y Gallinazo"...
Another Colombian obscurity via Bongohead!

MAKU Soundsystem..."Naga Pedale"...Makumbala 7"...(self released)
MAKU Soundsystem..."Atentos"
"Atentos" is one of the fantastic digital bonus tracks available with 7". Highly recommended afro-Colombian party music, and available here at a staggeringly low price.

Los Pirañas..."Hueles a Espíritu Joven"...Toma tu Jabón Kapax...(Vampisoul)

Selda..."Karaoglan"...Vurulduk ey Halkim Unutma Bizi...(World Psychedlia Ltd reissue)
One of the great stars of 70s' Turkey.

John Martyn..."I'd Rather Be the Devil"...Solid Air...(Island)
The late Martyn's psychedelic folk take on the Skip James classic. The whole Solid Air LP is excellent.

Anthony Braxton/Milford Graves/William Parker..."Fifth Meeting"...Beyond Quantum...(Tzadik)
Three of the elder statesmen of the avant-garde in a heavy blowing date from 2008. Recorded and mixed by Bill Laswell and a highlight in everyone's catalogues. Parker and Braxton double on reeds for this section.

Indeep..."Last Night a DJ Saved My Life"...45...(Sound of New York)
The perfect club tune to come out of all that free jazz blasting. Hey, I'm just trying to represent the kind of party my types prefer.

Blo..."Mind Walk"...Step Three...(Hot Casa reissue)
A heavy favorite by one of my favorite African rock bands.
