Radio Clandestino playlist 1/28

Thanks to DJ 12XU for filling in with a soulful tribute to MLK last week. I had a great time at the Sundance Film Festival and returned with some vinyl to share. Thanks for tuning in to Radio Clandestino. It returns every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.

Sun Ra..."Where Pathways Meet" (unreleased acetate mix)...Bob Blank--The Blank Generation...(Strut)
A collection featuring material recorded at Bob Blank's Blank Tapes operation. Some cool cuts from Lydia Lunch, Blood Ulmer and this funky Sun Ra tune.

Lloyd Miller..."Gol-e-Gandom" (version 2)...A Lifetime In Oriental Jazz...(Jazzman)
Salt Lake's legendary eastern jazz explorer has had some of his music released via the fine UK labels Jazzman & Strut. Highly recommended for those who find themselves drawn to the music of Alice Coltrane or Ahmed Abdul-Malik. It is groundbreaking like that.

Ruy Mingas..."Kolonial"...Africa Negra...(Sava)

Los Araguatos..."La Negra"...Gaitas...(CBS-Venezuela)

M.A.K.U. Soundsystem..."La Tomba"...MND 12"...(self released)
One of my new favorite bands!

Shaolin Afronauts..."Brooklyn"...Quest Under Capricorn...(Freestyle)

Menahan Street Band..."Everyday's A Dream"...The Crossing...(Dunham)
A DJ 12XU request, and I'm happy to oblige in thanks for the soulful playlist offered up as the Clandestino pinch-hitter last week. Contact either of us for that week's playlist and we'll email it to you.

Adrian Quesada w/ Sonia Moore..."Last Word"...12"...(Ubiquity)

Super Hi Fi..."We Will Begin Again" (DJ Trainwreck mix)...Dub to the Bone...(Electric Cowbell)

Up, Bustle & Out..."The Hand of Contraband"...12"...(Ninja Tune)

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra..."Samouri"...Last Odyssey...(Ubiquity)

Hayvanlar Alemi..."Guarana Superpower"...Guarana Superpower...(Sublime Frequencies)

Sonny Sharrock Band..."Seize the Rainbow"...Seize the Rainbow...(Enemy)
Another motherfucker of an LP from one of my favorite axemen.

Los Pirañas..."Toma tu Jabón Kapax"...Toma tu Jabón Kapax...(Vampisoul)

King Crimson..."Three of a Perfect Pair" (live)...Absent Lovers...(boot)
Live in Montreal 84.

Talking Heads..."Crosseyed & Painless"...Remain in Light...(Sire)

Lion..."Smoking Gun" (remix)...45...(Lion Head)
Obscure single out of Salt Lake, heavy minimal dub with sitar. Picked up at Salt Lake's recommended punk spot Raunch Records.

Soul Rebels..."Sweet Dreams Are Made of This"...Unlock Your Mind...(Rounder)
I received a few phone calls about this fun brass band rendition of the Eurythmics classic. These guys made the festival rounds last year.

Ebo Taylor..."Nsu na Kwan"...Appia Kwa Bridge...(Strut)
Nice new album by the Ghanaian highlife star with Tony Allen on this and other cuts. Produced by Ben Wolff.

Stephen Chai & No-Nation Orchestra..."More More More"...12"...(Nobaloney)
Excellent Utah-based band with a gorgeous 12" release, colored vinyl and all. Some King Crimson and afrobeat influences are immediately detected.

Sophistafunk..."Listen Up"...Twentyeleven...(Funk is so Phat)
These guys were kind enough to send along some vinyl! Check them out this weekend in New England. Check their tour schedule here.

Soulive w/ Karl Denson..."Povo"...Spark! 12"...(Royal Family)
A tribute to jazz-funk guitar great Melvin Sparks. This record features some fine versions of tunes by Yusef Lateef, Art Farmer and this Freddie Hubbard classic. Recorded right around the corner from my place!

Budos Band..."Day Tripper"...45...(Daptone)
Excellent destroy-the-Beatles cover! When I saw them live they announced this as "Acid Triper".

Eric Mingus & Jim Dvorak..."Baba O'Reilly"...7"...(Some Records)
Charles Mingus' son doing a Who cover on a 7".

Otis Redding..."These Arms of Mine"...History Of Otis Redding...(Atco)

Bob & Gene..."Your Name"...If This World Were Mine...(Daptone)
