Arthur Blythe..."Down San Diego Way"...Lenox Avenue Breakdown...(Columbia)
Luis Gasca..."A Love Supreme"...Born To Love You...(Fantasy)
William Parker w/Amiri Baraka..."Freddie's Dead"...The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield, Live in Rome...(Rai Trade)
I remember way back when, I always wanted a "free jazz" artist to take on Curtis Mayfield compositions. I figured William Parker would be the best guy for it. Several years later I got my wish. In this piece poet Amiri Baraka compares the "crimes" of Freddie with the real criminal action in the world, namely the aggressive tactics of the US and Israel. I remember seeing this project in Amherst, MA several years ago and half the crowd walked out because of Baraka's controversial fingerpointing. Fuck those holier-than-though assholes who can't handle expression that doesn't fit their politically-correct little world.
Donald Byrd..."Blackjack"...Blackjack...(Blue Note)
RIP to the trumpet great. From bop (Blakey, Coltrane, Monk) to R&B (formed the Blackbyrds) to hiphop (with Guru), as well as his work with the Jazzmobile, Donald went successfully in many directions as artist, composer, producer and educator. Here's a groovy one from '67.
Dorothy Ashby..."Afro Harpin"...Afro Harpin'...(Cadet)

We paid our respects to Burnt Sugar collaberator/conductor, the late Butch Morris, who passed away recently.

Clifford Thornton & the Jazz Composers Orchestra..."Ogún Bára"...The Gardens of Harlem...(JCOA)
An underrated LP which fuses progressive big band jazz and African folkloric music. Independently produced by a collective orchestra. Highly recommended, as is anything in Thornton's scant discography.
