Clandestino this Monday: Afro-funkin', Skokazoba, Budos Band ticket giveaways, etc. Tune in!

Staten Island funkateers the Budos Band will rock Northampton's Iron Horse Music Hall on Monday Night, March 29th. The band lays down some heavy funk rhythms with fiery brass, afrobeat boldness, a hint of Mulatu's Ethio-jazz and even some Motown soul influence in an outstanding instrumental showdown for the dancefloor. They have two full-length albums and numerous singles for NYC's Daptone Records. We'll be hearing from each of those records in anticipation of the concert, as well as other jams from the NYC soul scene, including joints from the Dap-Kings, Sharon Jones, Antibalas and others. Not only will we be spinning some Budos tunes on clandestino come Monday, but we will also be giving away some tickets to the show.

The Iron Horse show starts at 830 with DJ Bongohead spinning afrobeat and afro-funk, including selections from our Afrobeat Revival and Afrobeat Revolution compilation CDs. The CDs will be available for sale that night. Get them while they last.

And not only that! But also this week on clandestino we will also have our special guests this week in the studio with us as well...the Valley's #1 afro-funkers Shokazoba will be representing their funky vision of 21st century motherland-inspired music. Group members Wendall and Keith will be joining us to update us on some band activities, including the upcoming LimboFest 2010 (May 1 at Look Park). And we will have ticket giveaways for that as well!

So Afro-funk with us on Monday's edition of radio clandestino, airing live 230-430pm (ET) only at WMUA.org.

clandestino playlist 3/8...

This was another fun show. Every year on International Women's Day I play all women composers and singers. It is always a hit and I receive a lot of calls, as I did this year. I wanted originally to feature divas from around the world. The problem was I thought it was next week and planned something else for this week's show. My bad! But I did fit in as many as I could and had a few responses from male artists. It fit well since I've been dealing a lot lately with episodes (or lack of, at times) male/female dialogue. But it all worked out into a good time regardless of any last minute change-of-plans. Thanks to all who listened and called in to express love and support. Also thanks to J from the Alchemystics and Jimbo from Limbo Fest for coming down to hang out. Limbo Fest will be on May 1st in Northampton. We'll be hearing more about it as we get closer to the date. My apologies to the divas I wanted to play but ran out of time. Hopefully we'll get to their music next week. That includes Betty Davis, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Fairuz, Mercedes Sosa, Selda Bagcan, Aretha Franklin, Elis Regina and so many more! Here's to continued honest dialogue to mothers and fathers together!

Oum Kalthum..."Ghanna Rabi'bi-Lisan at-Tayr"...El Sett...(Buda Musique)
Najla..."Bint il Neel"...ReOrientalism cast recording...(Center for Cultural
"Bint il Neel" is a poem by Suheir Hammad, a friend of mine, and it is in tribute to great Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum.

Oum Kalthum..."Kayfa Marat ala Hawaka al Kouloub"...El Sett...(Buda Musique)

Bnet Marrakech..."Leilaa Lill"...Chama'a...(L'Empreinte Digitale)
An all-female group from Morocco and very highly rated.
And I played this one by their countrymen Nass El-Ghiwane just because I've been listening and feeling them lately.
Nass El-Ghiwane..."Min Zine Mdihak"...
Thanks to Jaleel for all the tunes from these Moroccan Rollers.

Mutamassik..."Raks Sharqi Scratch"...Complete Works...(Sound-Ink)

Alice Coltrane..."Stopover Bombay"...Journey in Satchidananda...(Impulse!)
Last Poets..."Black Rage"...Holy Terror...(RykoDisk)
This pair is for Suheir. I love the original tune by Mrs Coltrane and I find the poem to be quite inspiring, as well as sampling Alice.

Sabu Martinez..."Oh! Min Dara!!!"...The Dalacarlia Recordings...(Mellotronen)

Totó la Mompasina y sus Tambores..."El Pescador"...La Candela Viva...(Real World)
Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada..."El Pescador"...The Alchemist Manifesto...(ESL)
Two amazing versions.

The Alchemystics..."Type a Prayer"...single...(North Fire)
The Alchemystics..."Peace of Dub"...single...(North Fire)
Or, as J from the Alchemystics calls it, "Pizza Dub". Thanks to J and Jimbo for coming down to promote Limbo Fest 2010.

Sandra Isadore & Fela's Afrika 70..."Upside Down"...Upside Down...(Celluloid)
The feminine voice of Fela.

Grupo Fantasma..."El Consejo"...El Existential...(Nat Geo)
Grupo Fantasma..."Naci de La (Rumba y Guaguanco)...Sonidos Gold...(AireSol)
A brand new cut paired with a true classic for the Rumba Psicodelica set.

Celia Cruz..."Elegua" (Jose Marquez rmx)...digi...(Serenity in Sound)
Gaia Roots..."Cuba Linda"...MotherDrum...(Gaia Roots)
These two worked well together. Jose Marquez is a tasteful remixer while Shanti's Gaia Roots work with traditional rhythms. Check Gaia Roots this Saturday at Bishop's Lounge, 9 pm for a soft CD release party.

Oumou Sangaré..."Wele Wele Wintou"...Seya...(World Circuit)

Googoush..."Bemoun to Bemounam"...v/a-Pomegranates...(Finders Keepers)
Thanks to Finders Keepers for sending out the good jams.

Lyn Collins..."Think (About It)"...Think...(People)

Sharon Jones & Lee Fields..."Stranded in your Love"...v/a-Daptone Gold...(Daptone)
We end with a another male/female dialogue that I would believe to be resolved well between the two characters.
