Masstrópica's Mike P on Radio Clandestino and at Mystery Train this coming Monday/Ayler film tix giveaway

(poster by Josh B)

Mike P rolls into Amherst on Monday for a double trouble visit. First he'll be joining Andujar live in-studio at WMUA for a special all-Peruvian sounds edition of Radio Clandestino, 230-430pm (ET).

Mike Pigott is a frequent guest on Clandestino, as well as a couple of turns at Rumba Psicodélica in Greenfield. He runs the Masstrópicas record label and is an all around swell guy and we'll be happy to have him with us. The man is obsessed with Peruvian music, from chichas to hardcore. He'll be spinning us some gems from his travels down there. We'll be hearing cumbias, "bumps", psych rock, salsa and more.

Then at 6, head over to Mystery Train Records on N. Pleasant St to hear Mike talk about Peruvian LPs and 45s before hearing some music from Steamrollers and Bunwinkies. Here are more details.

ALSO: I will be giving away a couple of tickets to My Name Is Albert Ayler, showing at Pleasant Street Cinema. The documentary screening of the great saxophonist will be Tuesday night, 7pm. It is part of the Seeing Sound series. Film details here. Here is some of my favorite Ayler music. Thanks to Amherst Cinema/Pleasant Street Theatre for spreading Ayler's gospel.

Clandestino Special Edition: All Peruvian Sounds

Folx,

My guest this forthcoming Monday (the 6th of July) on Radio Clandestino will be Mike Pigott from Mass Tropica. Mike will be bringing lots of goods from his digging expeditions in Lima, Peru. You'll be hearing chicha, cumbia, salsa, garage, and more from the 60s to now.

Mass Tropica have recently pressed up a limited run of 45s by los Chapillacs, which we've been playing a good deal on Clandestino. We'll be hearing it again Monday, amongst many other Peruvian nuggets. So be sure to listen in at WMUA.org (91.1 for you locals).

Clandestino airs live every Monday from 230-430 pm (Eastern Time Zone) with Andujar and guests, exclusively at WMUA. Any given week you'll hear funk, soul, latin, african, jamaican, jazz, world, psych, hiphop, live interviews, giveaways, and much more. Give it a listen!

And don't forget...our "Afrobeat Revival" comp is out, with "Afrobeat Revolution" coming this month! For more details click here. Dusty Groove, my favorite on-line retailer, has it available in the States.

TODO MUNDO CUMBIA

click above poster for larger image

Yes folks that's right, I am the Guest Host for DJ Andujar's "clandestino" radio show on WMUA next Monday, May 25th, 2009. The show is from 2:30 to 4:30, Eastern Standard US time zone, broadcasting from the UMass Amherst radio station WMUA, 91.1 FM. You can go to the station's web site, www.wmua.org, and stream the show live (no archives at this point), or if you can't listen 'live' on the computer or the radio, then click on playlists, and type in "clandestino", and you can see what I played. I will be selecting all the latest cumbias (ZZK, Bersa Discos, cumbia villera, cumbiaton, etc) as well as classic old school, new traditionalists, experimental, folkloric, and related genres like vallenato, chicha, porro, and champeta (different but still related!). Casting a wide net, we are! Clandestino, hosted by DJ Andujar, is a great show that concentrates on groove & rhythm, from funk to Latin, jazz to world. Many thanks to Andujar for giving me this opportunity. Don't miss it each week - he will be back June first. ¡Sabor de cuuuuuumbia!!
