Radio Clandestino playlist 1/7...short set

It was a short set this past program because I went home sick. Feeling better now. Thanks!
Catch Radio Clandestino live every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.

Hamid Drake & Sabir Mateen..."Of Mind & Spirit"...Brothers Together...(Eremite)
It was a pleasure to spin this duo recording by two of my favorite musicians (and two of the nicest guys you could ever meet!).

Don Cherry..."Brown Rice"...Brown Rice...(Horizon)
Shout out to the downtown Amherst donut shop that was tuned into Clandestino. My pal Neil called and told me he heard this favorite tune of his cranking in the shop while he stopped in.

Shaolin Afronauts..."Amhara"...Quest Under Capricorn...(Freestyle)

Ginger Baker & Salt..."Wahala"...Live in Munich, Germny 1972...(Voiceprint)
Holy grail afro-rock set from the Cream drummer and his Nigeria-based ensemble featuring the Lijadu Sisters, BLO, Art Blakey and others. Many of these tunes appeared later on other albums by the artists presented.

Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalo..."Pygmy"...Uganda...(Tiliqua reissue)
Heavy and percussive statement from Japanese drummer Ishikawa and his band. The album was recorded after his stay in Africa and brings afro-percussion to a meeting with funky hard rock with some Zappa influence. We heard the funky album closer.

Fontella Bass w/Art Ensemble of Chicago..."Theme de Yoyo"...Les Stances Á Sophie soundtrack...(Nessa)
We pay our respects to the late Fontella Bass, who passed away after Christmas. Most popularly known for her 60s soul hit "Rescue Me", she was married to AEC trumpeter Lester Bowie and she made some records with the AEC, including this French film score. I bought this record in 1996 for $3 and have still never seen the movie. Bonus: here is the tune she wrote for Lester when he passed, in collaboration with UK band Cinematic Orchestra.

The Ex w/ the Dog Faced Hermans..."Lied der Steinklopfer"...45...(Ex Records)

Edzayawa..."Edzayawa"...Edzayawa...(Soundway reissue)

Afro Kelenkye Band..."Mother Africa"...2x45...(Voodoo Funk/Cultures of Soul)

BLO..."Mind Walk"...Step Three...(Hot Casa reissue)

This is the point I had to go home! Feeling better now and will continue to deliver the goods weekly!
