Clandestino Spiritual Game playlist 6/4...very special double show with Tony

This program was a real blast! Tony Udell of The Underground Spiritual Game (Mondays noon-230 WMUA) and I teamed up for a double whammy back-to-back jam where we guested on each others' shows. We decided to format it this way: I guested on Tony's show and brought some classic Motherland sounds and contemporary afrobeat (in keeping with his programming) and he then guested on my eclectic show. I wanted to hear all his favorites that he doesn't usually play on USG.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti..."Opposite People"...Opposite People...(Barclay reissue)
Why not start things off with the Afrobeat king?

Mulatu Astatqe..."Sabye"...v/a-Rough Guide To Ethiopia...(World Music Network)

Alognon Degbevi & les Veterens Jazz..."Gameli"...45...(International Radisco)

Franco..."Infidelite Mado"...Rough Guide To Franco...(World Music Network)

Opambuo International Band of Ghana..."Aunty Lucy"...Odo Yewu...(Bonne)

Slim Young..."Odo Yede"...Bisa...(Coconut)
Some nice highlife brought to me direct from Ghana.

Zaiko Langa Langa..."Katshi" pt 1...45

Lee Perry presents Seke Molenga & Kalo Kawongolo..."Nakoya"...African Roots...(Trojan issue)
A couple of Congolese vocalists showed up at the Black Ark around 78 and the result was an albums worth of African rumba/dub fusion.

Orchestre Stukas..."Colombo"...l'Afrique Danse...(Edition National/Africa)

Hallelujah Chicken Run Band..."Tamba Zimba Nayashe"...Take One...(Analog Africa)
This album features some early music from Thomas Mapfumo.

Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou..."Mi Kpon Bo Do"...45...(Albarika)

Ayaléw Mésfin..."Hasabé"...v/a-Ethiopian Soul & Groove...(Buda)

Prince Djib's..."Ogninwe"...v/a-Ivory Coast Soul...(Hot Casa)
We're looking forward to hearing the second volume, out soon on Hot Casa.

Super Boiro Band..."So I Si Sa"...v/a-Guinée: Cultural Revolution...(Syllart)

Orlando Julius & his Afro Sounders..."Home Sweet Home"...Orlando's Afro Ideas...(Ekosound)

Geraldo Pino..."Black Woman Experience"...Afro Soco Soul Live...(Soundway reissue)

Femi Abosede..."Bata Dance"...No Compromise...(Cultureforce)

Quantic w/ Sonny Akpan..."Use What You Got"...Mishaps Happening...(Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity)
A fine planting/harvesting song with Sonny Akpan of the Funkees.

Brownout..."Meter Beater"...Oozy...(Nat Geo Music)
We've both been spinning this one on our shows this spring.

Shaolin Afronauts..."Kilimanjaro" (live)...12"...(Freestyle)
Looking forward to this forthcoming 12" on the funky Freestyle label.

Hard Proof..."Lion of Mali"...Hard Proof...(Hard Proof Music)
Contemporary afrobeat from Austin, Texas.

Now we get to the Radio Clandestino side of things. We each make a selection, one after the other. It is amazing how many of the same favorites we have. Starting with Tony's "Afro Harping" selection...
 Dorothy Ashby..."Afro Harping"...Afro Harping...(Cadet)

Nina Simone..."Work Song"...High Priestess Of Soul...(Verve)

Aretha Franklin..."Dr Feelgood"...Live At The Fillmore West...(Atlantic)

Jorge Ben..."Si Manda"...O Bidú: Silêncio No Brooklin...(Atoll)

Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura..."La Revolución del Cuerpo"...Havana Cultura: New Cuba Sound...(Brownswood)

Art Ensemble of Chicago w/ Fontella Bass..."Theme de Yoyo"...Les Stances Á Sophie soundtrack...(Nessa)
I remember picking up my original Nessa issue of this for $3 in Boston back in the mid 90's. This represents my all time favorite band gettin' funky.

Les McCann & Eddie Harris..."Compared to What"...Swiss Movement...(Atlantic)

Roland Kirk..."Serenade to a Cuckoo"...I Talk With The Spirits...(Limelight)

John Zorn's Masada..."Tzofeh"...Alef...(Tzadik)
This was a cool left-field selection by Tony. I remember buying this when it came out back around 94 or so. Forgot how good it was.

Tito Puente..."Hong Kong Mambo"...Dancemania...(RCA Victor)

Ken Boothe..."Ain't No Sunshine"...45...(Wild Flower)

Cymande..."Bra'"...Cymande...(Janus)

Lyn Taitt..."Stepping Up"...v/a-Out On A Funky Trip...(Motion)
Jamaican funk.

Dyke & The Blazers..."Let A Woman Be A Woman, Let A Man Be A Man"...45...(Original Sound)
One of my all time fave bands.

Marvin Gaye..."Anger"...Here, My Dear...(Tamla)
Tony chose my favorite tune from one of Marvin's best sets, his "divorce album".

Curtis Mayfield..."Little Child Running Wild"...Superfly soundtrack...(Curtom)

Albert King..."Crosscut Saw"...45...(Stax)
It was just a short jog away from our radio studio to one of my earliest and best big concerts, with the late great Albert King on the pond at UMass in the mid 80s.

Jimi Hendrix..."Born Under A Bad Sign"...Blues...(MCA)
From Albert to Jimi...doing a tune that Albert made famous!! By the way, that's Albert on the top left of the album cover...one of Jimi's biggest influences.

Rage Against The Machine..."The Ghost Of Tom Joad"...Renegades...(Epic)
What a surprise selection by Tony! RATM doing a Springsteen tune. Definitely the first time we've ever heard Rage on Clandestino.

Bad Brains..."Pay To Cum!"...7"...(Bad Brain Records)
I grew up on punk and hardcore (and free jazz) so I decided to present our listeners with the best in the game.

Fishbone..."Subliminal Fascism"...Truth & Soul...(Columbia)

Can..."Vitamin C"...Ege Bamyasi...(Spoon reissue)
The Krautrock pioneers certainly get their fair share of spins 'round here, but Tony didn't know much of their music. Check it out...

Lowkey..."Obama Nation"...Soundtrack To The Struggle...(Mesopotamia Music)
Tony and I share a disregard for pseudo-Left Wing capitalist bullshit that the Obama party line hands us each day. Until now I was unaware of this British MC.

Getatchew Mekurya w/ The Ex..."Musiqawi Silt"...Moa Anbessa...(Mississippi/Domino Sound)
My favorite sax player from Ethiopia with my favorite Dutch anarchist punk band! A great match!

Asian Dub Foundation..."Fly Over"...Time Freeze...(Caroline)
