Radio Clandestino playlist 11/21...Rez rock, jazz, funk, folk & pop

In what seems to have become an annual Unthanksgiving (No Thanks-Give-It-Back/Thanksgrieving) tradition, my pals Josh (of Mystery Train) and El Cassique joined me in-studio for our radio respect session in which we played indiginous pop, jazz, etc and similarly themed music. For our two other past playlists check here and here.

Jim Pepper..."Wichi Tai To"...Pepper's Pow-Wow...(Embryo)
Our hero has a very helpful site dedicated to his recordings here.

Vernon Wray..."Faces in the Crowd"...Wasted...(Sebastian Speaks)
Three Wray brothers on one LP.

Redbone..."We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee"...45...(Epic)

XIT..."I Was Raised"...Plight of the Redman...(Rare Earth)
Possibly my favorite of the Rez rock LPs, with hard rock, funk, pow wow drums, and anti-America lyrics by Tom Bee.

Yaqui..."Brown Baby"...Yaqui...(Playboy)

Pygmy Unit..."Where The Drums Are Kept"...Signals from Earth...(private press/no label)
Jim Pepper and co.

Don Pullen..."Reservation Blues"...Sacred Common Ground...(Blue Note)

Mixashawn..."Who Is Polyester?"...Contemporary Indigenous Data...(self released)
Featuring some funky music by our guest last time out. Check his site here.

The Free Spirits..."Peyote Song/Girl of the Mountain"...Live at The Scene '67...(Sunbeam)
Recently unearthed live recordings from Pepper, Moses, Coryell and others.

Bob Moses (w/Jim Pepper and others)..."Slum Funk"...Love Animal...(Mozown)
Essentially another version of The Free Spirits, recorded in 67 but unreleased until the 90s.

Richard Cyr..."Salt & Pepper Table"...cassette...(self released)
From a tape that DJ Bongohead picked up at a pow-wow in New Hampshire.

XIT..."Awakening"...Silent Warrior...(SOAR)

Sabu Martinez..."Wounded Knee"...Afro Temple...(Grammofonverket)
This funky Latin-jazz LP is one of my all time favorites.

Robbie Basho..."A North American Raga"...Song of the Stallion...(Takoma)

Link Wray..."Shawnee Tribe"...Link Wray...(Polydor)

Lincoln St Exit..."Time Has Come Gonna Die"...Drive It!...(Mainstream)
The hard-rocking 60s band that became XIT.

Floyd Westerman..."Custer Died For Your Sins"...Custer Died For Your Sins...(Perception)

Smokey Robinson (w/Tom Bee)...Just My Soul Responding...Smokey...(Tamla)
Smokey collaborating with XIT lyricist Tom Bee on an awesome version here, complete with lyrics that question Smokey's patriotism.

Booker T & Priscilla..."The Indian Song"...Booker T & Priscilla...(A&M)
Former MG's cog, with his part-Cherokee wife on this album.

Rita Coolidge..."Cowboys & Indians"...Fall Into Spring...(A&M)
Booker T also produced his sister-in-law on this (and other) LPs.

John D. Loudermilk..."The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian"...Sings a Bizarre Collection of the Most Unusual Songs...(RCA Victor)

JD Blackfoot..."The Song of Crazy Horse"...The Song of Crazy Horse...(Fantasy)

Thanks for listening. Radio Clandestino airs live every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.org.
