Annual WMUA Fund Drive This Coming Week...Please Support!!!

Seriously folks, you think the University pays for it all? They could do A LOT more. They even charge WMUA rent!!!

I have some CDs I put together for those who donate, as a thank you. Here's what will be available for your generous contribution:

Rumba Psicodelica! 2009... It will include songs that we play at our Rumba nights, from afro-funk to cumbia to bugalú to latin psych and garage to rumbas. Some of who you'll hear on this include Harvey Averne's Barrio Band, Batata y su Rumba Palenquera, Bronx River Parkway, Chocolate Armenteros, Cedric "Im" Brooks, Ray & his Court, Sofrito and more! Many of these have never appeared on a commercial CD.

A new edition of the annual cover songs CD...that is--popular songs versioned in interesting ways. You will hear Trouble Funk doing Kraftwerk, Maceo Parker doing Sly Stone, Phil Upchurch doing Hendrix, John Tchicai doing Fela, Harry Roche Constellation doing the Who...and so many more!

Fever volume 3...another popular one every season! Hard 70s funk from the African motherland, this time we'll have the likes of Ikenga Superstars, Ofege, Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo, Orlando Julius and more from all over the continent.

Andujar's favorite 2009 tracks...this will include the likes of Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, Dengue Fever, Kokolo, Quantic, Nomo, the Heliocentrics, Omar Souleyman and many other favorites.

And Sounds from the Country of Texas (co-compiled with DJ Bongohead)...this was inspired by our Tejas program we did back in the summer. Everything from tejano funk to cumbia to psych rock to hiphop to blues...and even a little country swing!
These will all be double CDs.

And we will also have available again the ever-popular News Flash from Lee Scratch Perry Underground Radio Station, a single disk of amazing and diverse recordings from Perry's Black Ark Studio 76-78.

The double disks will be yours for a $25 donation, the single disk Perry jam for a $15 donation. All eleven disks can be yours for a $100 contribution! These disks are not available anywhere else, as I have made them specifically for this fund raising event. In addition, there will be various other WMUA-related items available, such as concert tickets, coffee mugs, shirts, hoodies, etc. Your donations are tax-deductable and much needed and appreciated.

Listen to my clandestino radio program this coming Monday 10/26 230-430pm (ET) and call 413-577-300 during the show to pledge your support. I will also have Ocote Soul Sounds in the studio with me.

61st Annual Fund Drive

Once a year, WMUA invites listeners to contribute to their favorite show during our broadcast of public affairs, UMass Sports and a variety of great music. The drive begins with the traditional 14-hour Polkathon blowout on Saturday, Oct 24th (beginning at 6:00am). This year’s goal is to raise $35,000 during the week.

WMUA, licensed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, is a student and community radio station, in continuous operation on campus for 61 years! WMUA employs 15 student department directors and relies on approximately 75 volunteers to produce programming and support the administrative effort. We broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to an audience within 25 miles of Amherst, as well as over the Internet via our live stream and podcasts. WMUA is one of the largest student organizations on campus, with an annual budget in excess of $100,000. Around $50,000 generated through individual donations, business underwriting and other fundraising.

All (tax-deductible) pledges of support will be thanked with t-shirts, concert tickets, CD’s and other gifts.

Tour Addendum

Here are some retrieved pictures from digi-cams. These were meant to be presented as part of my Tour Diary. Thanks to Jeff for the help.

These were from the Church Brewery in Pittsburgh

A couple of Urthquake photos. The bottom pic is from Tork Clock Studio in Greenfield. The top ???

Dan Friel at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn

And finally...some foul shit seen in a fast food joint somewhere on the road...

I Hear A Shadow

I got to see one of my favorite bands from back in my youth days. I listened to a ton of metal and then hardcore (after the gangsta rap phase and before I heard the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Peter Brotzmann or Fela Kuti) and when I heard Rorschach, I found a cool merger of the two scenes. With influence from punk bands like Black Flag and Die Kruezen, with some Black Sabbath/Slayer riffage, Rorschach were sort of the pinnacle of hardcore music for me. From the late 80s into the mid 90s (my punk/HC era), this NYC/Jersey band tore apart kids' heads with relentless assault on ears and bodies.

Few in the hardcore scene could play with the chops that these guys could. I took Dan Friel to see Rorschach back in 93 and it was his first underground show. He wondered if most punk bands were that good and tight! These guys blew everyone away. And hearing the progression of Charles Maggio's vocals through the recordings were inspiring, as he went from recording "Remain Sedate" line by line (due to his difficulties with Hodgkin's disease) to having the larynx-shredding screams of "Protestant". And their cover of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" proved to be popular still as I heard the crowd reaction at a show on their recent reunion tour.

Playing a week long tour was out of the blue to me. When I heard they were getting the guys together for one last glorious run-through, I wasted no time booking my ticket to Santos Party House in Manhatten. After being greeted by good friend Andy Crespo at the door I witnessed a capacity crowd of about twice as many people as had ever seen them back in the day. The band was fierce and tight, with no one believing thay hadn't played together in 16 years (!) They were fucken great! Having a kick ass sound system really brought them to the level they sacrificed playing in the punk scene. (They never wanted the bullshit of the early 90s metal scene). And the whole thing closed with Ted Leo as guest vocalist on a closing cover of Black Flag's "My War". And it was nice catching up with a few folks that I hadn't seen in decades.

Here's a few pics from Bob Urthquake:

Stout Magic

The Breakfast Stout from Founders Brewing has arrived. This seasonal offering is again welcome with open arms as the winter season in New England seems to be looking to an early manifestation.

I first tried it two winters ago when seeking a bold and different brew from my usual hop-bomb pallette. The announcement on the label that it is a "double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout" had my spirits lifted before sipping, but it was the left-field manoeuvre of picturing a baby (!!) on the label that enticed me to purchase. This little guy is happily sampling from a Founders container. Not that I promote children associated with alcohol, but the odd choice of marketing tact on a pseudo-old school label was intriguing and we can assume it is merely to show us a human appreciating delicious taste.

With a dominant coffee aroma, thick and dark on color (like all good stouts) and a sweetness that accompanies the strong rush of flavor, this beer brings you some kick. It's perfect a treat for that morning when you're snowed in. Founder's Breakfast Stout is magical when you discover one hiding in your fridge for those times.

I think it's about $4-ish in 12 oz bottles at Ryan & Casey's in G-field. A four-pack can also be had. At 8.3%, it's higher alcohol than many stouts, so enjoy it as a treat for those times when you feel you deserve it.

WMCB Masquerade Ball 10/24...Benefit for Community Radio!!

WMCB-LP, a low-power community radio station serving Greenfield, Turners Falls and parts of Deerfield, will be holding a benefit costume dance party on Saturday October 24th at the Greenfield Grille at 30 Federal St.

This is a good way to show your support for community radio. This is a radio station that I helped get off the ground, along with so many other kind folks. Greenfield Community Television (GCTV) houses the station, as well as provides major support. The station airs every day from noon until midnight at 107.9 FM and features lots of music and talk programming.

The party will be a good time. Doors open at 8, with a cocktail hour from 830-930 with Drew Hutchinson's band Frugal Jazz Project. J & M Entertainment will DJ the dance party from 10 til 1 am. Cash bar, appetizers and prizes for best costume. The tickets are $10 and can be picked up at GCTV. They are limited to 120, so act fast.

WMCB's website/blog is here.
