Thanks for joining me for this thing we call Hot & Warped. An eclectic all-vinyl radio program which airs live every Monday night 10-midnight (EST) at WMUA.org. The show features classic & contemporary, rare & reissue, weird & straight musics. To hell with weak ears!
Thanks to Rockmaster Rob for filling in last week while I was away. Check out his record label, Sedimental, here. And occasionally he will pop up on WMUA filling in for various DJs. Thanks a ton, Rob!
My guest this week was Phil Straub, of WRSI (The River)'s very popular show Funky Friday. Chock full of funk, soul, R&B gems, you can catch it every Friday from 6-midnight at that station. For this occasion Phil brought some other flavors of his liking, from country-jazz to surf to bebop to hiphop to crazy rock. Playlist is posted below.
All (most?) new vinyl sent to me gets played. And as a courtesy I link to label/artist websites. All styles welcome. Address below. This week we had Jeff (Noise Nomads) Hartford back for more disk-selecting.

Gabo Brown & Orchestre Poly Rythmo..."It's a Vanity"...v/a-African Scream Contest...(Analog Africa)
A hard & heavy afro-funk nugget from Benin, and one of my favorite bands.
Ali Birra..."Hawaash"...Ammalele...(Mississippi/Domino Sound/Little Axe)
Omar Khorshid..."Raqset el Fada"...Guitar El Chark...(Sublime Frequencies)
Traffic..."Dealer"...Mr Fantasy...(Island)
A great groovy rock tune, we wish the late Chris Wood a happy birthday!
Meridian Brothers..."Niebla Morada (Purple Haze)"...45...(Soundway)
Solo Hit..."Imoikeme"...45...(Analog Africa)
Produced by noted Nigerian artist Victor Uwaifo, reminds me of Uwaifo's "Ohue"...limited to 1500 copies.
Blo..."BLO"...Phase 2...(Strawberry Rain reissue)
Giants in the Nigerian 70s rock scene, this group's fantastic second album on solid reissue.
C.S. Crew..."Doin' The Good Thing"...Funky Pack...(Cultures of Soul)
More recommended Nigerian reissue action. This is a perfectly named record. Order yours here.
Erwin Bouterse & the Group Roetoe..."Disco Party"...v/a-Surinam!...(Kindred Spirits)
YambĂș..."Sunny" (Whiskey Barons rework)...12"...(Montuno/Vampisoul)
A disco classic from this NYC latin group, given an updated edit here courtesy of Whiskey Barons. I heard about WBs from Rickard (Tropical Treats-Stockholm) and told DJ Bongohead (the "executive producer" here) about them. We went to meet Sam & Ben (Whiskeys) at one of their parties and hit it off with them. Bongohead's connections with Spain's Vampisoul helped to get this 12" done as a promo for the Subway Salsa compilation of works by the Montuno label. Super-limited to 300 copies. Act fast!
Flash & the Dynamics..."Guajira Sicodélica"...v/a-Latin Psychedelia...(Rough Guides)
Another compilation that my pal Bongohead put together. This cut by this NYC group of the early 70s is a long-time fave of mine and have spun it at many a party. It even got Sonic Youth's Thurston out of his seat to see what record was spinning!
R. Stevie Moore..."I Missed July"...45...(Sweaters & Pearls)
A home-taping legend whose name I've known for decades but have honestly never checked his stuff out until this release. Some sweet 60s-inspired tunes that are just a bit "off" in a cool way. This was sent courtesy of Jason Dean of the excellent 7 Inches blog, who also put the record out. The cut I featured is from '87, the flip from 94.
Rind..."From the Singer"...Exhaust Yourself...(Rotted Tooth Recordings)
Chicago band, 250 press, cool artwork too! Thanks to Jeff for bringing this along.
Six Finger Satellite..."Love (Via Machine)"...Machine Cuisine 10"...(Sub Pop)
I remember seeing SFS open for Neurosis at the old Limelight in NYC in '94. Thanks Jeff for bringing by this blast from the past. He, in fact, selected most of the second half of the program.
Ministry..."All Day Remix"...Twitch...(Sire)
Forcefield..."Pac"...split 7" w/ Lightning Bolt...(Load)
Harry Partch..."Castor & Pollux"...The World Of Harry Partch...(Columbia)
We just had to feature some music of the musical visionary and instrument-builder (and dare I say iconoclast?) Harry Partch. Happy birthday to an American original!
John Cale & Terry Riley..."Church of Anthrax"...Church Of Anthrax...(Columbia)
While we're shouting out birthdays to experimental composers, we may as well wish one to the great Terry Riley!
The Shocking Blue..."Boll Weevil"...At Home...(Pink Elephant)
Fabulous late 60s Dutch band, responsible for the original versions of "Venus" and "Love Buzz". One of my favorites.
Vertical Slit..."Fair Exchange"...Slit & Pre-Slit...(Smudge)
The Upsetters..."Grumblin' Dub"...12"...(Island)
A nice dub taken from Junior Murvin 12" for "Police & Thieves".
Lightning Bolt...(last section)...split 7" w/ Forcefield...(Load)
Frank Lowe..."Chu's Blues"...Fresh...(Freedom/Arista)
And a final birthday greeting on this June 24 to the late saxophone mangler "Freedom" Frank Lowe, who I was lucky enough to have met before he passed on. He even honored my request to hear a solo sax piece sans band. On this cut Frank gets into some funky R&B with the Memphis 4.
