Hot & Warped playlist from 6/3

Thanks for joining me for this thing we call Hot & Warped. An eclectic all-vinyl radio program which airs live every Monday night 10-midnight (EST) at WMUA.org. The show features classic & contemporary, rare & reissue, weird & straight musics. To hell with weak ears!
All (most?) new vinyl sent to me gets played. And as a courtesy I link to label/artist websites. All styles welcome. Address below. Please note that we DO NOT post pirated MP3s here for your free grubby grab. Go buy some tunes from the bands and labels or from honest record stores or other legitimate outlets.  --Andujar

Rikki Ililonga..."Sansa Kuwa"...Dark Sunrise...(Now Again)
Heavy Zambian rock. My last week's guest (Becky aka Harpo) traded me the three-LP box set. A fantastic package by Now Again!

Guelewar..."Tasito"...Touki ba Banjul...(Kindred Spirits)
Hypnotic sounds from the Gambia.

Nkengas..."Jungle Beat"...Destruction...(Secret Stash reissue)
Heavy afro-funk from Nigeria from a band with many names. Highly recommended and another great Motherland reissue from Secret Stash! Order here.

Masekela & Hedzoleh Soundz..."Languta"...Masekela Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz...(Blue Thumb)
A very nice album from the great South African trumpeter working with a funky West African outfit. Thanks to Omar for the swap.

Black Soul..."Dakar Sound"...Black Soul...(Beam Junction Ltd)
Senegalese band that was based in France and recorded this super-funky LP in Philly. A common record, by African standards, but quite fun. "A Tom Moulton mix".

Keni Okulolo..."Call Me A Fool Today I'll Be Wise Tomorrow"...7"...(Hot Casa)
Less-than-stellar sound quality does not keep this tune (and the flip) from being a funk bomb. I can completely understand the lyric sentiment.

Aka The Max Demian Band..."The Lizard Song"...Take It To The Max...(RCA Victor)
A funky hard rock tune on common record. Get yours in the dollar bin today!

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band..."Snake Bite"...Tomorrow Belongs To Me...(Vertigo)
I think this snarling groovy tune by this Scottish hard rock band woulda made a fantastic cover choice for one of those Am Rep bands.

The Equals..."Black Skin Blue Eyed Boy"...45...(Shout)
An early Eddy Grant composition and a killer joint.

Timothy McNealy..."Funky Movement #2"...45...(Shawn reissue)
One of the funkiest tunes you will ever hear. "Turn it up!...haha".

Curtis Mayfield..."Hard Times"...45...(Curtom)
Happy birthday to one of America's greatest ever artists, Curtis Mayfield. He wrote this tune in the late 60s and two others have cut it before even he did. Another great version!

Jackie Mittoo..."Summer Breeze"...The Keyboard King At Studio 1...(Universal Sound)

Koudede..."Hat-Iman-In"...45...(Sublime Frequencies)
Recorded 1/12 in Mali. As of 6/13, music has been made illegal in the country. Which makes this an even more crucial document of ripping desert grooves.

Ali Birra..."Ishururuu"...Ammalele...(Mississippi/Domino Sound/Little Axe)

Whitefield Brothers w/ Mr Lif & Edan..."The Gift"...12"...(Now Again)

The Afros..."Feel It" (long version)...12"...(Rush)

Mantronix & Tricky Tee..."Johnny The Fox"...v/a-The Rap Pack...(Fresh)
An essential showcase of Kurtis Mantronik's skills as a producer. The whole album is all killer.

Charanjit Singh..."Raga: Bhairavi"...Synthesizing: 10 Ragas To A Disco Beat...(Bombay Connection)
Bizarre uptempo proto-techno ragas by this noted Bollywood producer, ca. 82.

Moondog & his Honking Geese..."Bumbo"...10"...(Honest Jons reissue)

Nomo..."Bumbo"...Invisible Cities...(Ubiquity)
A highly underrated ensemble with their take on the above Moondog composition.

Jah Lion..."Columbia Collie"...v/a-This Is Reggae Music vol 3...(Mango)
A very nice compilation which features quite a picking of essential mid 70s Lee "Scratch" Perry productions from the Black Ark.

Burning Spear..."Free Black People"...Spear Burning...(Pressure Sounds)

Quantic presenta Flowering Inferno..."Te Picó El Yaibí"...45...(Tru Thoughts)

Albert Ayler..."Bells" (first section)...Bells...(ESP Disk reissue)
A ferocious (and extremely important) document in underground free jazz. Check ESP's official site here. They have returned to the scene after decades and not only are extensively reissuing their catalog but also releasing new music by contemporary artists.

Roscoe Mitchell Quartet..."Tnoona"...Roscoe Mitchell Quartet...(Sackville)
A good-listenin' quartet with George Lewis, Spencer Barefield & Muhal Richard Abrams.

Ma Sein Myine..."Beneath Meza Mountain"...v/a-The Crying Princess: 78s from Burma...(Sublime Frequencies)

Earl Coleman..."Hippy Heaven"...The Latin Love-In...(Worthy)
A hilarious boogaloo that Jonny Semi-Colón of Spanglish Fly "turned me on" to. That hippy. Speaking of Spanglish Fly, here's some details on an LP they are hoping to put out.

Testament..."Apocalyptic City"...v/a-Power Chords vol 1...(Atlantic/Megaforce)
Takes me back to being 13 and blasting Testament and other Bay Area thrash bands in my walkman headphones.

Chicha Libre..."La Danza de Los Simpsons"...12"...(Barbés)
Lovely 12" of all covers by this favorite NYC band.
