Radio Clandestino playlist 12/24

We put together a bangin' Xmas eve show with absolutely NO holiday tunes. Not really my thing so it was business as usual at Clandestino HQ.
I did get to catch up on a few things I've been meaning to get to. I also had a fruitful visit to John Doe Jr Records in Greenfield MA to pick up some cool soul 45s. I've played a number of them on this program. Check the JDJ website here.
Catch Radio Clandestino live every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.

Claude Delcloo & Arthur Jones..."Africanasia" Pt 1 (excerpt)...Africanasia...(Actuel)
Decloo was involved with the French magazine Actuel in the late 60s and was able to help a lot of American free jazz musicians get record dates and festival gigs in Europe. This album features some of them, such as saxophonist Arthur Jones and members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Cedric 'Im' Brooks..."Satta Masa Ganna"...United Africa...(Water Lily)
Brooks remains one of my favorite artists. The Jamaican reedsman has contributed greatly to many styles of music and has played with artists like Sun Ra, Sonny Rollins, Akoya Afrobeat, the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari and many others. I love his band on the classic Satta riddim.

Johnny Dyani Quartet..."Wish You Sunshine"...Song For Biko...(Steeplechase)
Johnny Dyani's albums often express joy and sorrow together within the compositions. One of South Africa's Blue Notes, bassist Dyani and these guys left the apartheid situation behind to go play in Europe as a mixed-race band, something that was illegal in their home country. Dyani made several fantastic records as a leader, as well as recording with Chris McGregor, Abdullah Ibrahim, David Murray and others. This album is one of my favorites, featuring Don Cherry and ex-Blue Note Dudu Pukwana and drummer Makaya Ntshoko.

Sabu..."Aurora Borealis"...Sorcery!...(Columbia)

Kool & the Gang..."Funky Stuff"...45...(De-Lite)

The Eliminators..."Blood Donors Needed (Give All You Can)"...Loving Explosion...(Soul Brother reissue)

The Impressions..."Do You Wanna Win?"...LP promo 7"...(Curtom)
Taken from a four cut 33rpm 7" of tunes from the Curtis produced LP Check Out Your Mind!

Lyn Collins..."Mama Feelgood"...45...(People)
Sad note from the JB camp: Marva Whitney has passed. I found out on the way to the studio and didn't have any Marva music with me to share but I was planning to play this tune from another JB diva Lyn Collins. RIP to both (Lyn Collins passed back in 2005).

On The Spot Trio..."Critically Acclaimed Shit"...45...(Colemine)

Johnny Colón..."Merecumbé"...Hot Hot Hot!...(Cotique)

Orquesta Flamboyan con Frank Dante..."Flores"...Different Directions...(Cotique)

Tabou Combo..."Respect"...Respect...(Secret Stash reissue)

Martín López y sus Estrellas..."Mi Ritmo te Llama"...Cocinando...(Mass Trópicas/LITA)

Here's a trio of heavy afro vibes from 70's Trinidad...
Safi Abdullah..."Afrika Is Burning"...v/a-When The Time Comes: Rebel Soca...(Shanachie)
Black Truth Rhythm Band..."Kilamanjaro"...Ifetayo...(Soundway reissue)
Lord Nelson..."Shango"...12"...(Soundway)

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley..."Akoko Ba"...Simigwa...(Voodoo Funk/Academy reissue)

The Heptones..."Party Time" (discomix)...Lee Perry--Disco Devil: The Jamaican Disco Mixes...(Trojan)
This new double CD collection has some of my favorite Lee Perry productions from the Black Ark ca 76-78, all in extended form from the Jamaican 12" singles. Recommended.

Boogie Down Productions..."My Philosophy"...12"...(Jive)
Real hiphop from my era.

Black Ivory..."Surrender"...45...(Today)
An early Patrick Adams produced soul cut from 72.

Sugar Pie Desanto..."Soulfull Dress"...45...(Checker)

Ernie K Doe..."Here Come The Girls"...v/a-New Orleans Funk...(Soul Jazz)

Ronnie Foster..."Chunky"...45...(Blue Note)
A funky 45 picked up at John Doe Jr's in Greenfield.

Los Demonios del Montaro..."La Chichera"...v/a-Cumbia Beat vol 2...(Vampisoul)

Koudede..."Nelil-igorasan (Life in the Bush)"...45...(Sublime Frequencies)

Curriculum Mortis..."Después de la Muerte"...Sentencia de Muerte...(Ultra Sonido)
A reissue of a classic South American demo tape, now available on vinyl. Some 80s Peruvian thrash from a time when it was dangerous to be a punk or metalhead in Peru. Members of this band went on to form Novalima, who we get to next.

Novalima..."Machete"...Afro...(Mr Bongo)
