Radio Clandestino 10/29...annual fundraising/massive storm

Our annual fund drive here at WMUA is taking place right now. No matter that we are in the midst of a hurricane, we're delivering the goods! I didn't bring any LPs this time, just a stack of recent 45s, a few CDs and then the awesome library of music WMUA has acquired from respected record labels! The amount of support we have gotten from bands and labels is astounding and just perusing the playlist for this episode alone I can heartily thank the likes of Ubiquity, Soundway, Barbés, Vampisoul, Daptone (and others) for not just sending along promo links but actual CDs and/or vinyl. And let's give a special Fund Drive shout out to Ubiquity Records, The Alchemystics and Shokazoba for donating CDs to send away as thank-you gifts to our donors. It's never too late to donate. Click here to do so on-line. Your contribution is tax-deductible and immensely appreciated.
Radio Clandestino, with Andujar & friends, airs live every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.
This week's choosings:

Twin Roots..."Know Love"...Lee Perry-Disco Devil...(Trojan)
A fine selection of some of Scratch's 12" Jamaican singles.

The Heptones..."Storm Cloud"...Party Time...(Mango)
A fitting tune right now, both weather-wise and because of the political forces at battle. This was dug out of our reggae stacks and we reminisced about the days when Island used to care enough to send us their releases. This album is a classic Lee "Scratch" Perry production and, in my opinion, one of the greatest LPs ever to come from Jamaica. Sublime Heptones harmonies, Scratch's "Space Echo", explicitly socialist lyrical imagery and cool cover art. And the record has one of the best Bob Dylan versions these ears have ever heard! A true highlight of reggae music.

Junior Delgado..."Storm Is Coming"...Original Guerilla Music...(Sound Boy)

Frente Cumbiero Meets Mad Professor..."Bestiales 77" (Mad Prof dub)...Frente Cumbiero Meets Mad Professor...(Vampisoul)

The Semi-Colon..."Ebenebe"...Ndia Egbuo Ndia...(Comb & Razor)

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley..."Bolga Besia"...v/a-Ghana Funk...(Hippo)
Another of my favorite West African artists, a Ghanaian bandleader with an immediately recognizable sound.

The Apostles..."Onye Akpa"...45...(Voodoo Funk/Academy)

The Funkees..."Break Through"...Dancing Time...(Soundway)

Chicha Libre..."Juaneco en el Cielo"...Canibalismo...(Barbés)

Juaneco y su Combo..."Selva, Selva"...v/a-Cumbia Beat vol 2...(Vampisoul)

Ondatrópica..."I Ron Man"...Ondatrópica...(Soundway)
Sabbath gone tropical.

No BS Brass..."Take On Me"...45...(Electric Cowbell)
Quite fun brass version of the 80s staple by A-Ha!

Los Fulanos..."Blue Monday"...Si Esto Se Acaba Se Que Siga El Boogaloo...(Lovemonk)
Yes, it's a New Order tune gone mambo.

Charles Bradley..."Stay Away"...45...(Dunham)
Nirvana gone psych-soul.

Jimmy Cliff..."Guns of Brixton"...Rebirth...(Sunpower)
Cliff covering a Clash tune that references Cliff's character in The Harder They Come.

Carolina Chocolate Drops..."You Be Illin"...45...(Warners)
Check out this Run DMC cover.

Souad Abdullah...(title unknown)...v/a-Choubi Choubi: Folk & Pop Sounds From Iraq...(Sublime Frequencies)

Freqnik & WDRE..."Favela & B-Boy Funk"...45...(Boro)
It's jut murdering my brain, trying to figure out what they are looping with that bassline.

Orgone..."Crazy Queen"...Cali Fever...(Ubiquity)

Joe Tex..."You Said A Bad Word"...I Gotcha...(Dial)

Bunny Sigler..."Great Big Liar"...v/a-Philadelphia Roots...(Soul Jazz)

The Alchemystics..."Elements"...Spread Hope...(NorthFire)

Shokazoba..."Opinion Shapers"...Congress For Sale...(self released)

Nomo..."Invisible Cities"...Invisible Cities...(Ubiquity)

Hayvanlar Alemi..."Yekermo Sew"...45...(Sublime Frequencies)
Mulatu gone Turk-punk.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion..."Afro"...Extra Width...(Matador)
Coming to the Iron Horse 11/1. Congrats to the ticket winner!

Fumaça Preta..."A Bruxa"...45...(Music With Soul)
Very cool Sonics cover!
