Radio Clandestino playlist 6/18

This would be my new record for latest playlist. Since this program a two weeks have gone by, including a whole 'nother program this past Monday, which was guest hosted by DJ 12XU (who played an ace mix of funk & soul, as well as a few freer nuggets like Paul Flaherty's debut spin on Clandestino!). I had to be in Boston that day and he delivered the funky jams one after another. His playlist can be peeped here. And don't forget to tune into his regular Wednesday night (530-8 ET) program Hidden Spheres at WMUA.

For this program I got to play mostly contemporary releases, with a few classics thrown in.

Catch Radio Clandestino every Monday 230-430pm (ET) at WMUA.

Latin Percussion Jazz Ensemble..."The Opener"...Just Like Magic...(Latin Percussion Ventures)

Jungle By Night..."Afro Blue"...Jungle By Night...(Kindred Spirits)

Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra..."Crosstown Traffic"...45...(First Word)
Jimi Hendrix gone afrobeat?

Lack of Afro..."Spooky"...45...(Freestyle)

Monophonics..."In Your Brain"...In Your Brain...(Ubiquity)

Brownout..."JPT"...Oozy...(NatGeo Music)

Funky Music Machine..."I Can't Help Myself"...v/a-Fallin' Off The Reel II...(Truth & Soul)

Roy Roberts..."So Much In Love"...45...(Cultures of Soul)
Fantastic rare soul from this recommended 45 on a Massachusetts label.

Gizelle Smith..."June"...45...(Record Kicks)

The Right Now..."He Used To Be"...45...(no label)
Another thing that Sergio from Orgone has his hands on. It's hard to keep up with all his projects.

Orgone..."Cali Fever"...Cali Fever...(Ubiquity)

T Bird & The Breaks..."The Clap Hands Song"...Never Get Out Of This Funk Alive...(self released)
I was sorry to have missed their show at The Iron Horse but they are still on tour and you should try and see this funky unit out of Austin, TX.

Spanglish Fly..."New York Soul"...Latin Soul y BugalĂș...(self released)
Come see these guys at the Green River Festival this year!

Ralph Weeks..."We're Still Strong"...12"...(Soundway)
Another funky Soundway single, this time focusing on Panama Soul.

The Moments..."Baby I Want You"...45...(Wax Poetics)

The New Bermuda Stealers..."Life is a Song Worth Singing"...Life...(EdMar)

Afro Kelenkye Band..."Mother Africa"...2x45...(Cultures of Soul)
Another funky gem from Boston's Cultures of Soul label, some smoking and unreleased 70s cuts from this groovy Ghanaian band.

The Funkees..."Salem" (CD bonus track)...Dancing Time...(Soundway)
Finally a dream come true: I have waited many, many years for an anthology of this awesome Nigerian band's work.

Led Zeppelin..."Trampled Under Foot"...Physical Graffiti...(Swan Song)
Definitely not the first time I've played this slamming funk rock cut from the mighty Led Zep. When I was a little kid I used to have so much fun changing the windows around to see the different options for scenes. This is a definitely a band you need to have the vinyl of, as they have some great packaging on most of their albums.

Hayvanlar Alemi..."Yekermo Sew"...45...(Sublime Frequencies)
A brand new 7" that fucking destroys me. Heavy cover of Mulatu's Ethio-jazz classic. This contemporary band out of Turkey are not fucking around. I need to get my hands on the LP.

Chico Trujillo..."Gran Pecador"...45...(Electric Cowbell)

Frente Cumbiero..."Ika"...45...(Names You Can Trust)
Another ripper from one of my favorite bands in the world today.

Meridian Brothers..."Sostengan al Angel" (instro)...45...(Names You Can Trust)
I had to pitch this narco sound up to 8. Thing's just too fucking slow for me!

The Free Spirits..."Don't Look Now (But Your Head's Turned Around)"...Out Of Sight And Sound...(ABC)
It was the birthday of Creek/Kaw saxophonist Jim Pepper, so I decided to dust off The Free Spirits, an early jazz-rock rager of a band featuring Larry Coryell, Bob Moses, Chris Hills and co.

Thanks for listening.
