Radio Clandestino playlist 3/12

This show was a lot of fun, as I got to stretch out a little more with my avant-garde leanings to some degree...which of course resulted in a few phone calls from concerned listeners. Aw, fuck 'em! Open your ears!
Don't forget about our monthly Sweet Exorcist vinyl throwdown this Friday at The People's Pint. DJs Andujar, Studebaker Hawk and our guest Harpo Marx.

Archie Shepp..."The Magic of Juju"...The Magic Of Juju...(Impulse)
This tune seemed to bother a few listeners...but it has always been a favorite of mine. The expanded rhythm section on this went well with the Fuji dub below. (One of my favorite album covers as well!)

Adewale Ayuba..."Fuji Dr Ewon"...Fuji Dub...(Triple Earth)

Edzayawa..."Edzayawa"...Projection One...(Soundway reissue)
Fantastic sounds from this young Ghanaian combo, recorded in Nigeria. Details here.

Lijadu Sisters..."Bayi l'Ense"...Mother Africa...(Knitting Factory reissue)
Another beauty from Knitting Factory's reissue program for the Nigerian sisters.

Getatchew Mekurya & The Ex..."Tezalegn Yetentu"...Moa Anbessa...(Mississippi/Domino Sound)
A dream match-up right here! One of my all time favorite bands, those Dutch anarchist squatter punks The Ex, with the Ethio sax-force Getatchew take on some classics and more. The fact that two amazing labels/shops, Mississippi and Domino Sound came together to repress this on vinyl with a hefty book is just icing on the cake. Highly recommended.

Warhead Construction..."Graceful Bird"...promo
Here's hoping this heavy Nigerian tune gets a reissue soon. Listen here.

James Knight & The Butlers..."Uncle Joe"...Black Knight...(Cat)

Joe McPhee..."Shakey Jake"...Nation Time...(Unheard Music reissue)
By request even!! Shout out to Joe McPhee, this year's lifetime achievement honoreé at the Vision Festival in NYC, set to take place for the week of June 11-17. Beers to you Joe!

Blue Mitchell..."The Message"...The Last Tango = Blues...(Mainstream)
Funky jazz version of the Cymande classic. Blue Mitchell had a birthday on Tuesday.

Eddie Harris..."Drunk Man"...Excursions...(Atlantic)

Don Drummond..."Man in the Street"...v/a-Ska Bonanza...(Studio 1)
Happy birthday to the great Jamaican trombonist Don Drummond!

Jean Manix & Ted Osai..."Booma Woman"...45...(Soundway)

Orchestra Baobab..."Collette"...Made In Dakar...(World Circuit)

Black Truth Rhythm Band..."Save d Musician"...Ifetayo...(Soundway reissue)

Ralph MacDonald..."Calypso Breakdown"...Sound Of A Drum...(Marlin)
Another artist who had a birthday this past week, the late great studio session man/composer/percussion master Ralph MacDonald. Here's another great album cover painting!

The Blackbyrds..."The Baby"...45...(Fantasy)

Chico Science e Nação Zumbi..."Rios, Pontes e Overdrives"...Da Lama Ao Caos...(Chaos)
Another artist with a birthday this past week, the late Brazilian singer and Mangue-Bit visionary Chico Science.

Frente Cumbiero meets Mad Professor..."Ariwacumbé"...Frente Cumbiero meets Mad Professor...(Vampisoul)

Spanglish Fly..."Me Gusta Mi Bicicleta"...45...(Electric Cowbell)
We close our program with a hot-off-the-press single by NYC boogalovers Spanglish Fly. A tune about that centuries-old form of transportation.
