clandestino playlist 3/28...RIP Lula Côrtes

In this program we paid our respects to the late Lula Côrtes, Brazilian psych visionary and one of my favorite musicians. Lula passed away on Saturday at the age of 61.

We also heard some music from Sandy Bull, in anticipation of the documentary about his life.

We also played some music from Amir el Saffar, the Iraqi trumpeter who visited UMass on Tuesday as part of the Magic Triangle Jazz Series. Unfortunately, due to my coming down with some heavy illness I had to miss my most anticipated concert of the year. Fuck. That's life.

Sandy Bull..."Blend"...Fantasias For Guitar and Banjo...(Vanguard)
There's a new documentary about Bull, made by his daughter called "No Deposit No Return Blues".

Finally we have a recording of this legendary band that toured Europe and the US in the early 70s. Ginger's african band features all three members of BLO, the Lijadu Sisters, a couple of horn players and Art Blakey(!). I'm happy to have this artifact in my hands. Here the track is untitled but is really a cover of BLO's "Preacher Man".

Geraldo Pino..."Shake Hands, Pt 2" (raw version!!)...45...(Suzumi)
A much more raw and screaming version of a tune that was already bonkers.
