clandestino playlist 2/21...funk rockin'!

(poster by DJ Bongohead)

What a great time I had bringing you some funky rock jams. We're just getting tuned up for our Rumba Psicodélica FUNK ROCK party this Friday night at The Rendezvous. Studebaker Hawk, Bongohead and myself will be bringing the 60s/70s funk rock vinyl and Mr Bell of Bell & Howl will be providing the visual stimual. We'll also be handing out prizes for Funkiest Outfit...and Most Rocking Outfit. The thang gets rolling at 930 and there is no cover charge. We hope to see you there!

American Gypsy..."Inside Out"...American Gypsy...(Chess)
An American band based in The Netherlands in the 70s, I first heard this tune via Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow on Brainfreeze. The LP has an extended BIG intro.

Isley Brothers..."Fight the Power" Pt 1...45...(T-Neck)

Betty Davis..."He Was A Big Freak"...They Say I'm Different...(Just Sunshine)
Betty is a huge inspiration for the FUNK ROCK night...

Santana..."Persuasion"...Santana...(Columbia)

Ofo The Black Company..."Allah Wakbarr"...v/a-Nigeria 70...(Strut)

Funkadelic..."I Got a Thang, You Got a Thang, Everybody's Got a Thang"...Funkadelic...(Westbound)
The other biggest inspiration is right here.

Black Merda..."Cynthy-Ruth"...45...(Chess)

Jimi Hendrix Experience..."Little Miss Lover"...Axis: Bold as Love...(Reprise)

Edwin Starr..."Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On"...Involved...(Gordy)
An underrated Norman Whitfield production, the whole album is killer.

Stu Gardner..."Devil In A Man"...Sanctified Sound...(Stax)
Doing his best Sly Stone impersonation.

Sly & the Family Stone..."Trip to your Heart"...A Whole New Thing...(Epic)

Chairmen of the Board..."Skin I'm In"...Skin I'm In...(Invictus)

Curtis Mayfield..."Future Shock"...Back to the World...(Curtom)

Baby Huey..."Hard Times"...The Baby Huey Story...(Curtom)
Another Curtis Mayfield composition/production.

The Devil's Anvil..."Karkadon"...Hard Rock From the Middle East...(Columbia)
Funky NYC based late 60s band mixes Middle Eastern instruments and sounds with rock.

Can..."Halleluhwah" (first section)...Tago Mago...(Spoon)
As experimental and avant-garde as they may be, they sure could get really funky as well!

Serge Gainsbourg..."Requiem por un Con"...Les Annés Psychedéliques...(Le Smoke Disque)

Tina Turner..."Whole Lotta Love"...Acid Queen...(United Artists)
Tina in dominatrix mode.

Aerosmith..."Lord of the Thighs"...Get Your Wings...(Columbia)
White boys getting funky. I grew up on this shit. This would also be the first time I've ever played Aerosmith on the show...or in the club.

Babe Ruth..."The Mexican"...First Base...(Harvest)

Baris Manço..."Hal Hal"...Sakla Samani Gelir Zamani...(Turkuola)
Great Turkish funk jam, just ripe for hip hop sampling.

Selda Bagcan..."Ince Ince"...Selda...(Finders Keepers reissue)
Recently used in a Mos Def tune, as evidenced here.

Riot..."Just Beyond"...Welcome to the World of Riot...(Motown)

Heart..."Sing Child"...Dreamboat Annie...(Mushroom)
This band used to awesome before they turned into radio garbage in the 80s.

ZZ Top..."Cheap Sunglasses"...Degüello...(Warner Bros)

Funkadelic..."Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"...One Nation Under A Groove...(Warner Bros)

Skin Alley..."So Many People"...Two Quid Deal...(Stax)

Asiko Rock Group..."Lagos City"...v/a-Nigeria Disco Funk Special...(Soundway)

Isis..."April Fool"...Isis...(Buddah)
That is the band pictured below on the album jacket.

Cyril Neville..."Gossip"...v/a-New Orleans Funk...(Soul Jazz)

Antonio Carlos e Jocafi..."Simbareré"...Cada Segundo...(RCA)
This one is for Phil Sena.

Thin Lizzy..."Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed"...Johnny the Fox...(Mercury)

Black Sabbath..."Wicked World"...Black Sabbath...(Warner Bros)
Even Sabbath got funky!
