15 sounds you'd be surprised I like

I originally posted this on my Facebook page, but figured I'd share it here too.

Those of you who've known me long enough know that I like much more than the African funk and Latin music I post up. But I will shamelessly enjoy the following:

(ZZ Top)

1...classic rock...Not having a CD player in my car, I tend to keep my dial mostly on Rock 102 and never tire of the likes of Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Van Halen, Led Zep, etc. Although there's plenty of crap I don't like as well.

2...death metal...Groups like Death, Atheist, Cynic, etc, play some of the tightest and most powerful rock music you'll ever hear. I can appreciate that most can't get past the vocals, but I like some of them.

3...Merle Haggard...and other 60s/70s country songwriting geniuses. Merle remains my favorite.

4...Phil Ochs...both on a lyrical and musical level I can hang with this tragic figure. I even have a 45 he recorded in Swahili!!

5...hip hop...I really don't go out of my way to hear new hip hop because most of it lacks the funk. And contrary to most people's opinions, I tend to prefer popular rap to the bland underground indy rubbish that has been filling up college radio airwaves. But give me the shit I grew up on: Public Enemy, Run DMC, X Clan, Ultramagnetic, De La Soul, BDP, Jungle Bros.

(Noise Nomads)

6...noise...Having no interest in noise-for-the-sake-of-noise that seems to be in fashion with talentless shits, give me a good Masonna or Borbetomagus and we will crush hippies together.

(Dennis Ferrer)

7...(some) house music...Yeah, you read that right. I can't say I like 95% of what I hear but a good percussion-heavy Afro-house mix that tells a story in it's grooves is much more relevant and appealing to me than chin-scratching intellectuals jerking off to avant-garde piano tinkling.

(Dyke & the Blazers)

8...every James Brown rip-off...Although I prefer all the Dyke & the Blazers rip-offs out there!

9...hardcore punk...Need to let it out but don't want to get into a street brawl? Black Flag, Zero Boys, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Negative Approach, Siege, etc will take care of you.

(check Album Tacos!)

10...The Beatles...The rumor is that I hate the Beatles. I don't. I actually like most of their music, especially the later stuff. What I hate is the fact that I have to hear them EVERY FUCKING DAY of my life because they are always playing out of some radio, TV, etc everywhere I go.

11...be bop...I love Bird, Monk, Herbie Nichols, Max Roach, etc. We can't begin at this late point in the game to understand how beautiful and radical this music was when it came out of NY in the 40s.

(Sunny Murray, Gary Peacock, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry)

12..."free jazz"...Especially the stuff with heavy percussion, African influence, and screaming tenor and bari sax. Coltrane, Ayler, Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and so many more.

13...80s electro...In 2010 I've gone back to the likes of Nucleus, Strafe, Mantronix, etc. Back then I always lumped this stuff in with rap. I used to breakdance to these sounds.

(Sandy Denny)

14...60s British folk...I love the Pentangle, Fairport Convention, COB, etc.

15...Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Esquivel, etc....I find this stuff to be highly creative and interesting.

And the stuff I don't like:

1...The Doors...a second rate rock band trying to be a second rate jazz band.

2...all that singer/songwriter stuff that is all over "Progressive" commercial radio that dosn't interest me in the least. And that includes both the folk and indy rock side of it.

3...Irish music...with very few exceptions, I haven't been able to enjoy this stuff.

4...contemporary pop-metal. That shit on Laser Rock radio is pretty lame. They don't know if they want to be hard or emo.

5...bad reggae...not to be confused with good reggae.

6...jam bands
