clandestino playlist 3/30...dust and grooves!

It was certainly a fun show this week. We had our very special guest, Eilon Paz, who has a cool site called www.dustandgrooves.com. A professional photographer (and an excellent one at that), Mr Eilon offers us portraits of crate diggers revelling in all their glory. Check the site, it's very hip. We also paid our respects to the late Manny Oquendo, bandleader, composer, percussionist, latin music artist representing Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino and conjunto Libre. Sr Oquendo passed on 3/25 of a heart attack. We also note the passing of former Motown hit machine drummer Uriel Jones, who also passed recently. He played on such popular numbers as "Heard it Thru the Grapevine" and "Cloud Nine", among many others. Sorry that we didn't get to hear any of those, as we ran out of time. Hopefully we'll get to that next week. We also got late visits from dj B-COMING and Maura. Thanks for listening.

Legendary New Orleans producer/writer/arranger/bandleader/pianist/vocalist Edwin "Eddie Bo" Bocage has passed on. He was the creator of some of the US's stankiest funk numbers, not too mention all the groovy rhythm & blues and street jazz classics, tunes like what we played toward the conclusion of the program. We'll certainly miss Eddie Bo. Check your bucket! On another note, much appreciation goes to George Myers aka DJ Snack Attack for coming thru with the tasty portion of 45 RPM magic. Check out our monthly "Sweet Exorcist" night of vinyl jams of all things funky, every third friday at the People's Pint in downtown Greenfield, MA. Eddie Bo, RIP

This obituary is used without permission, with care and respect for the announcement of Eddie Bo's passing.

By STACEY PLAISANCE

(AP)

New Orleans blues singer-pianist Eddie Bo, who worked with musicians such as Irma Thomas and Art Neville, has died of a heart attack. He was 79.

His death was confirmed Friday by his close friend and booking agent, Karen Hamilton.

Hamilton said Eddie Bo, whose real name was Edwin Joseph Bocage, had a "sudden, massive heart attack" while out of town Wednesday. She said he "went very quickly, very peacefully."

Bocage was an accomplished keyboardist-pianist with a career spanning more than five decades. Hamilton said he counted Professor Longhair as one of his biggest inspirations.

An accomplished songwriter, Bocage penned the 1960 Etta James hit "My Dearest Darling" and "I'm Wise," which was made famous by Little Richard when renamed and released in 1956 as "Slippin' and Slidin'".

Bocage released more than 50 singles in his career _ a number second only to Fats Domino among New Orleans artists _ including "Check Mr. Popeye" in 1962.

"That was probably his biggest hit," said friend and musician Gregory Davis, 52, a trumpet player for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. "That song kept him working for a long time."

Early in his career, Bocage toured with singers Joe Turner, Lloyd Price and the late Ruth Brown and Earl King. But he spent most of his career with New Orleans musicians, among them soul singer Irma Thomas, R&B singer Robert Parker and singer-keyboardist Art Neville, the eldest of The Neville Brothers.

"He knew his craft," said Thomas, who added that Bocage was one of the first people she worked with when she entered the business in the early 1960s. One of her first shows away from New Orleans was with Bocage in Atlanta with R&B singer Gladys Knight as the opening act, she recalled.

Thomas also performed regularly at a nightclub Bocage ran in the city from the late 1970s to early 1980s, she said. But Thomas' fondest memory of Bocage had nothing to do with music, she said.

"We loved going fishing," she said with a chuckle. "We used to go all the time, and that's my favorite memory of him."

After a stint abroad in the U.S. Army, Bocage attended the Grunewald School of Music in New Orleans. That's where he developed a unique style of piano playing and arranging that incorporated bebop voicings, influenced by Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, according to a biography on his Web site.

Hamilton said Bocage was looking forward to performing at this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He was a regular at the popular outdoor musical event and was slated to perform there on April 26.

Besides music, Bocage was also known for his carpentry skills. He repaired the wind damage to the roof of his house after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hamilton said. And when he wanted to open his own restaurant, he converted an old office building into the cafe he named, "Check Your Bucket" after his 1970 hit. It was flooded during Katrina and wasn't reopened.

Tomorrow on clandestino (3/23) we'll be paying our respects. We'll check out several tunes and productions from the legend, including this one.

Events at Food For Thought Books

Our friends at the worker-collective Food For Thought Books in Amherst, MA have some events coming up that I would highly reccomend.

and then there's this one:

Films for Thought presents GAZA STRIP 3/23

.Title of Event: Films for Thought presents GAZA STRIP
When: Monday, March 23, 2009 7:00 PM
Location: Food for Thought Books Collective
Description: U.S. filmmaker James Longley's unsettling documentary captures the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with blunt candor. In January of 2001, Longley traveled to the Gaza Strip. His plan was to stay for two weeks to collect preliminary material for a documentary film on the Palestinian Intifada. It was during his stay that Ariel Sharon was elected as Israeli Prime Minister. As violence erupted around him, Longley threw away his return ticket and filmed for the next three months, acquiring nearly 75 hours of footage. Gaza Strip, his first feature documentary, is an extraordinary and painful journey into the lives of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip struggling with the day-to-day trials of the Israeli occupation.

The film will be followed by a panel discusstion with Students for Justice in Palestine (Hampshire College),Laila Shannan, Alisa Klein, and Joseph Levine.

Laila Shannan is a Palestinian who has been living in the United States for ten years. She is the mother of two children. Like many Palestinians, Laila's extended family is divided between four continents, with a good portion coping with daily life on the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Joseph Levine, a Professor of Philosophy at UMass Amherst, graduated with a BA from UCLA in 1975 and a PhD from Harvard in 1981. He has worked as an activist on Middle East conflict for over 25 years, and published several articles and op-ed pieces on the topic. He lived in Israel for about two years in 1970/71.

Alisa Klein, a resident of Western MA, is a dual citizen of Israel and the United States, and is a veteran of the Israeli army. Raised in a family personally affected by the Holocaust, Israel and Zionism were viewed by her parents as the answer to the historic persecution of the Jews. As a result of her experience in the army, and subsequent academic and professional work in the Arab world, Alisa developed a strong commitment to anti-militarist values and became an anti-Zionist Palestine solidarity organizer. Upon returning to Western MA, Alisa founded and co-organized Akoolu Lakum - the Western Massachusetts Palestinian Film Festival; the Western MA Fast for Palestine Solidarity; and many other vigils and actions calling for a just peace in Israel and Palestine. She served as a facilitator for Kopkind, an educational summer retreat for journalists to learn more about Palestine and Israel and for two years, produced and DJ'ed two shows on Northampton's community radio station WXOJ-LP – one concerned with a radical political analysis of news and culture coming out of the Middle East, and the other an Arabic-language music show.

Students for Justice in Palestine is a student group at Hampshire College whose mission is to raise awareness of the oppression and vast suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation. They are also in support of BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) as a viable form of non-violent resistance and strongly support the co-existence of Jewish and Arab peoples. They do not support and in no way encourage the use of violence as any form of solution. Overall, they stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people throughout the world and will continue to strive for their rights to life. As a result of a two year campaign led by SJP, Hampshire College is becoming the first institution of higher learning in the United States to divest from the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine. The Middle East Peace Coalition is a community-based group of activists committed to peace and justice for Israelis and Palestinians, and an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip and to Israeli settlements in those areas.
